Azusa Sugimoto Philippine 2016

I had a great experience studying abroad in the Philippines for 1 year. This was my first experience to be surrounded by all English, all day. I was the only Japanese student in the class, and I lived in a dorm, International Center where all students are paired with a roommate from another nationality. So, I spent almost all the time with foreign friends. In this environment, I was able to lose my hesitation to speak English and gained confidence to communicate with others. I really appreciate having Filipinos and other exchange students around and I will never forget this experience!.

Atsushi Kawakubo Thailand 2016

Meika Wada Thailand 2016

I went to Thailand as an exchange student for 10 months. I had a lot of great experiences there but it was not easy for me. The most difficult thing is to communicate with others because it was my first time to speak English in daily life. Before I went to Thailand I had never studied English so hard, so the first semester was really hard for me. I had to make a presentation in the class, I had to discuss various things in English but I couldn’t completely understand what people were saying. After the first presentation, I started to write a diary in English and study hard, and I always tried to talk to others in English. At the beginning I was very shy to talk to the others but now I think I should have started earlier. While I was living in Thailand I tried new things a lot; to live by myself, to travel by myself and make a presentation with foreign friends. I think these things will help me in the future. If you want to study abroad I recommend studying English harder before you go and don’t be afraid of doing new things.

Honoka Matoba Taiwan 2016

First semester was really hard for me because most of the exchange students around me were from China. It means I was the only student in this University who couldn’t speak Chinese. Moreover, Taiwanese students couldn’t understand my English because of my bad pronunciation. I totally lost confidence and was afraid of talking with people. It’s really frustrating that I can only say a few things about what I wanted to say. So from the second semester I started to go to the Chinese language center. My other classmates in the center were from different countries. I learned how to communicate with people from different backgrounds. In addition, I made some best friends who came to my room as new exchange students. They are from China and Korea. Soon I was not hesitant to talk with them at all. After they came, my life was completely changed and my English speaking skill improved a lot. I was helped by many people in Taiwan. I didn’t know why everyone was so kind to me. English was unnecessary in Taiwan and my Chinese was not enough to talk but I always thought about why I was there and what I can do for them. Now I know that I can connect Taiwan and Japan. I can tell Japanese people how much people in Taiwan do for Japanese guests. I think the most important thing to practice speaking language is just to find someone who you want to really talk to. 非常感謝台湾! 臺灣和日本是永遠的朋友!
